Atlanta is the capital of Georgia and the state's largest city. "The Phoenix City" is a nickname referring to Atlanta's ascent after the Civil War. The phoenix appears in Atlanta's seal and flag. Atlanta is also known as the "New York of the South" after Georgia's nickname, "The Empire State of the South." Another popular nickname, the "Los Angeles of the South," was popularized by drivers who have been stuck in one of Atlanta's many traffic jams.
