Sitka is considered by many to be Alaska's most beautiful seaside town and is sometimes referred to as the "Paris of the Pacific"! The splendid community is located on the west side of Baranof Island named for Alexander Baranof, governor of the Russian American Company who founded Sitka in 1799. To its east are snow-capped, mountains and volcanoes and to the west, the great Pacific Ocean which brings Sitka its mild climate. This remarkable place in the Alexander Archipelago is a gateway to adventure in the 50th US State.
Sitka is a diverse community and offers a combination of Native Tlingit culture, Russian history and the vast Alaskan wilderness.
In the late fall and early spring, the local waters are a breeding ground for Humpback Whales and sea lions. Tufted puffins, bald eagles and other birds are abundant in the summertime. The Tongass National Forest is the largest temperate rain forest in the world. Sitka offers many other experiences; hike through the spruce forested mountain trails, kayak to other nearby islands or fish for world-class salmon or halibut. If playing in the great outdoors is for you, so is Sitka.
The view from this camera is ever changing with wildlife as well as other exciting activities. The brave men and women of The United States Coast Guard conduct drills with helicopters and boats right in front of the camera's location. Cruise ships are also in full view from May thru September and bring thousands of tourists each. Viewers can see Northern Lights in the winter and beautiful long 22-hour days in the summer. Sunsets can be breathtaking so visit us each evening.
