Ft Meyer's Beach
area.
The Caloosa Indians, believed by some to have traveled by raft from the Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula,
were the first to inhabit the area.. They were followed by famous explorers, including Juan Ponce de Leon
in 1513 and Hernando de Soto in 1539, and Spanish Conquistadors. In the late 1800's, notorious pirates
including one Augustus Black, marauded the gulf. Their loot is still rumored to be hidden in the area.
Later hardworking, respectable residents created a thriving shrimping industry which still returns the
gulf waters delicacy to local tables and beyond.
Estero existed as a peninsula until with a thin slip of land linking it to the mainland was washed away
by a Hurricane in 1926 making it an island.
