The folks at EarthCam have done it again, capturing yet another huge construction project from start to finish this time with the new home of the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers. Levi’s Stadium is the first new NFL stadium to be built in California in 50 years and cost about $1.2 billion. The stadium seats about 68,500 fans and is the first pro football stadium to achieve LEED Gold certification. In fact, 49ers officials are so proud of the stadium’s sustainable status that visitors can actually view display inside the stadium that shows how much energy and water the structure is using in real time.  more... 9/29/2014

EarthCam was selected to document and promote the construction progress with three megapixel construction cameras and one live streaming HD webcam. Oh! Darling, this is awesome. We had always assumed Abbey Road would be swarming with tourists -- but watching it via live video feed proves the crosswalk is even more entertaining than we imagined. The interwebs are abuzz with news that there is, indeed, a 24/7 camera trained on the "zebra crossing" made famous by the Beatles' "Abbey Road" album cover. With a regular laptop camera and sophisticated software, researchers may be able to detect atrial fibrillation about as accurately as with a standard electrocardiogram (ECG), according to a new pilot study. The technology records and analyses video footage of a person’s face and detects subtle shifts in skin colour that indicate changes in blood flow. “Existing ECG-based technologies are used only for patients who had symptoms,” said the Jean-Phillipe Couderc of the University of Rochester Medical Centre in New York, who led the study.   more... 9/12/2014

Xerox has teamed with researchers to pilot a new technology that could give doctors and patients an easier way to detect and monitor the most common type of arrhythmia using a basic webcam. Xerox built software algorithms that analyze the skin on the face for subtle color changes that could indicate irregular blood flow caused by atrial fibrillation. A paper published by HeartRhythm explains how proof-of-concept was established in a pilot project at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry.  more... 9/11/2014

Rare Tamworth piglets become internet sensation after live webcam success (irishexaminer.com)
A litter of rare Tamworth piglets have become an internet sensation after starring in a live webcam. Dubbed “Piglet-Cam”, the broadcast has been set up at the Lost Gardens of Heligan in Cornwall to give viewers a taste of the antics of a rare Tamworth sow and her 10 piglets. The Tamworth breed of pig is classed as “at risk” by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust. The piglets join a number of other rare animals at the gardens, including a flock of Devon and Cornwall longwool sheep.  more... 9/9/2014
