The Virgin Islands were explored by Christopher Columbus in 1493. In 1917, the U.S. purchased these islands from Denmark for $25 million. Congress granted U.S. citizenship to Virgin Islanders in 1927. Tourism is the main economic industry, accounting for 70% of employment. All goods manufactured in the Virgin Islands are duty-free when transported to the United States.
