Founded in 1812, the city of Columbus has been Ohio's capital since 1816. The city has grown to become the most populated city in Ohio. Columbus's huge land area expansion has facilitated this population growth. Annexation has grown the city from 39.9 square miles in 1950 to over 225.9 square miles today.
