After a disappointing attempt to free the USS Intrepid from decades of Hudson River
mud accumulation a month earlier, powerful tugs successfully eased the historic icon
from its Pier 86 berth for its downriver journey to renewal Tuesday, December 5, 2006.
The second attempt succeeded under the direction of the U.S Navy and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
In a dramatic moment the USS Intrepid unfurled its gigantic American flag in tribute
as the tugs moved it past the Ground Zero shore point and later towed the carrier past the Statue of Liberty to Bayonne, NJ where it will be refurbished.

Webcam visitors will be able to monitor
the reconstruction live daily and "be on board" virtually for its triumphant
return during Fleet Week 2008 to an updated Pier 86 where it will resume duties as the
Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum.
The Intrepid served the United States Navy for 31 years. The aircraft carrier made military
history as a veteran of World War II and Vietnam, a NASA recovery vessel for the Mercury
and Gemini space missions, and as a participant in the blockade of Cuba during the Cuban
Missile Crisis. The ship was built at Newport News, VA and was commissioned on August 16th,
1943. It is classified, as an Essex class short- hull Fleet Carrier that is 898 feet long,
weighs 42,000 tons and is equipped with 1,600 hatches and doors and 20,000 miles of electric
cable. The Flight Deck of the Intrepid can host three football games simultaneously.
The EarthCam Camera is mounted at the highest point of the ship's mast where it will continue
to transmit live views during the vessels renovation.
