October 28, 2015 will mark the 50th Anniversary of the completion of the Gateway Arch which was built as a monument to the vision of Thomas Jefferson and St. Louis’ role in the United States’ westward expansion. Thomas Jefferson’s presidency was responsible for the Louisiana Purchase and for sending Lewis and Clark on their famous expedition.
The Eads Bridge has been one of the most iconic structures in St. Louis since its 1874 opening when it pioneered the use of steel as a structural component. Once the bridge was built, St. Louis was able to stake its claim as an industrial powerhouse of the Midwest. Later, streetcars, carriages and eventually automobiles would be allowed to cross the upper deck.
