EarthCam Debuts Construction Camera Time-Lapse for New Dunbar High School

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

New York, August 20, 2013 -- The ribbon was cut for the new Dunbar High School in Washington, DC yesterday, unveiling the state-of-the-art $122 million facility located next to the previous 1970s-era building. EarthCam’s construction camera technology was onsite since December 2011 to document the progress in high definition megapixel imagery.

The new 280,000 square foot Dunbar High School leads the way in integrating technology into an educational setting, both inside and out, utilizing solar panels for a source of “green” power to digital projectors and interactive whiteboards in classrooms to enhance the learning experience. EarthCam’s construction camera technology was right at home on this jobsite, documenting progress for the new building that will welcome 1,100 students this school year. Project teams from Gilbane and Smoot Construction shared views of the progress on a public web page, inviting the community, students and alumni to watch Dunbar’s transformation.

Founded in 1870, Dunbar was the country’s first public high school for African Americans, producing generations of black leaders in fields such as engineering, education and law. The new Dunbar facility, located right next door to the original building, is an interesting way to bridge the past and the present. One particular nod to the past is a restored Steinway piano featured in the theater, which was first used a century ago at Dunbar.

At the completion of the project, EarthCam’s video editors combed through the thousands of captured jobsite images and hand-edited them into a professional time-lapse movie. Showcasing the most dynamic views of the process, watch 20 months of construction from groundbreaking to ribbon cutting.
