New parents and family members can check in on their infants hospitalized in UPMC’s neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) any time of day and from anywhere in the world thanks to a new camera system installed in the NICUs at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC and Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC. Children’s Hospital and Magee-Womens Hospital are two of only three hospitals in the state to implement this password-protected webcam system called NICVIEW, which, through an internet connection, gives families a virtual connection to their newborns.  more... 2/19/2014

Now, your pet goldfish can go where no guppy has gone before. Studio Diip has set up a rig with a webcam, where the fish aquarium is strapped to a remote-controlled car—and the fish gets to steer. "In an attempt to liberate fish all over the world, the first self driving car for fish has been developed. This car moves by detecting the fish’s position with computer vision," the studio said. The prototype ”Fish on Wheels” uses a webcam to track the fish's movement, a battery-powered Beagleboard and an Arduino controlled robot vehicle.  more... 2/14/2014

New ISS cameras set to provide high quality Earth views in near real time (gizmag.com)
On Jan. 27, two Russian Cosmonauts undertook a six hour spacewalk in order to install two new British-manufactured Earth imaging cameras to the Russian segment of the ISS. The initiative, announced in 2011, will allow anyone with an internet connection access to the near-live feed, which will provide higher quality results than the currently-installed standard definition cameras.  more... 2/5/2014

If you’re walking down Main Street in front of town hall in Kentville, smile: you’re on not-so-candid camera. The Town of Kentville has placed a web camera in an upstairs office in town hall to provide a live view of Main Street on its website. Community development co-ordinator Lindsay Young said the town used to have a live web cam years ago, but it was unreliable, which was frustrating to users.
