This Time Lapse of the Washington Monument Restoration Is a Thing of Beauty (fusion.net)
The 555-foot stone structure suffered major damage during an August 2011 earthquake that struck the nation’s capital and other East Coast cities. The 5.8 magnitude quake caused cracks to open throughout the monument and damaged the elevator. The $15 million repair and restoration project will officially end today with a ceremony on the National Mall. Today is the day that visitors set foot inside the Washington Monument, nearly three years after a 5.8-magnitude earthquake closed it for repairs. About 1,800 members of public, including veterans wounded in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and their families, were allowed inside starting at 1 p.m. ET. A company called EarthCam used a special camera to capture months worth of repair work on the Washington Monument, and now you can watch the time-lapse footage of the landmark’s reconstruction. The 555-foot marble obelisk was forced to close after a 5.8-magnitude earthquake shook the area in August 2011, but it is scheduled to re-open Monday.
