Welcome to the Eiffel Tower!

The icon of the city of
Paris
has dominated the French Capital skyline since it was dedicated in 1889 for the International Exhibit of
Paris
. Today with twin lighthouse beacons at the top, 335 spotlights trained on its world-renowned
structure and 20,000 bulbs to create a shimmering effect every 10 minutes on the hour, the
tower brings its own spectacular glow to the "City of Light."
EarthCam and
A Paris Apartment
present a unique view of the tower limited until now to the windows and balconies of nearby residences.
Built in tribute as part of the centenary of the French Revolution, the tower has had
colorful history over its own 111-year span. It was designed and built by Gustave Eiffel,
who also designed the structure supporting Frances' gift to America,
The Statue of Liberty
The proposal of Eiffel, an architect and structural metal engineer, was the unanimous choice
from more than 700 submitted. Despite a protest against the structure signed by 300 Parisians
including architects, engineers and many famous citizens, construction began in 1887. It took
300 workers two years to build driving 2.5 million rivets to assemble 15,000 iron sections.
Finished with 40 tons of paint in time for the exhibition, it lured visitors from all over
the world. Those hearty enough to climb the 1,652 steps to the top were rewarded with
dramatic views of Paris. Its 300-meter (984 foot) height rescued it from wrecking crews
in 1909 because of its use as a telegraphy antenna critical to communications at that time.
Later French radio and television made use of the antenna at the top. The Tower was listed
as the world's tallest building until 1930 with the completion in New York City of the Chrysler Building.
Today although the stairs are still available, elevators carry visitors to the top three platforms. Attractions on
the platforms include The Jules Verne Restaurant on the second level.
The restaurant requires reservations at least a month in advance. A bar, souvenir shop,
the restored office of Gustave Eiffel and the most exciting view of the Paris Panorama
can be found on the top tier.
