Anchors Aweigh in New York City

Since 1984 the days leading up to and including Memorial Day have been reserved in New York City to honor
the men and women of the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard, as well as visiting sailors from allied
nations. Fleet Week 2009 promises another great New York City welcome from Times Square to Battery park for
more than 3,000 guests who make their temporary home on 11 ships docked for the occasion in Manhattan
and Staten Island.
The newly refurbished
Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum
located at Pier 86 will be the center of
activates beginning as the official "Parade of Ships" reviewing stand May 20th. The museum will also host
a series of events throughout the week including a wreath laying ceremony honoring the heroes of Iwo Jima,
concerts, and contests between ships including a tug of war, best chow and other challenges.
The west bank of the Hudson River will become the "public reviewing stand" for the parade led by USS
Iwo Jima, and the USS Roosevelt .The parade will start in New York Harbor just south of the Verazano
Narrows Bridge and move up river from 10am until 1pm.
The week is filled with
special ceremonies,
social events, and open house on ships docked in Manhattan,
military demonstrations, contests, entertainment, and ceremonies
from the Bronx, and Staten Island to
Manhattan's Central Park. Two military aircraft flyovers honoring those who
lost their lives in service to the United States will highlight the 2009 tribute.
