The Dominican Republic is a Latin American country located on Hispaniola, the second-largest island in the Caribbean's Greater Antilles archipelago.

The Dominican Republic was discovered by Christopher Columbus on December 5, 1492 during his exploration of the New World. It was his crew's discovery of gold deposits that later led to the first permanent European settlement in the Americas, its capital Santo Domingo. It is the site of the first cathedral university, European-built road, European-built fortress, and more. Hispaniola lies west of Puerto Rico and east of Cuba and Jamaica. Its western third is home to Haiti, making Hispaniola one of two Caribbean islands that are split by two countries, Saint-Martin/Sint Maarten being the other. The island shares the waters of both the Atlantic to the North and The Caribbean Sea to the South.

The culture of the Dominican Republic is a blend of the European colonists, Taínos and Africans, and their cultural legacies. Spanish, also known as Castellano (Castilian) is the official language. In 1697 the western third of the island became a French possession and later in 1804, became the Republic of Haiti. Throughout the centuries the island changed possession numerous times from Spanish to French then back to Spanish rule and was constantly characterized by political unrest and civil war.

This camera is located in Puerto Plata, one of the northern provinces of the "DR". The area has become an increasingly popular tourist attraction since the late 1990s mainly due to its fine beaches. It borders the Septentrional mountain range to the north (which separates it from Laguna Salada).
